Toner is a hair care product that removes gold and red tones from bleached hair. Sometimes bleached hair can have off overtones that result from a bleach blonde dye job. These tones can range from gold, to brassy, to the over bright yellow of movie theater popcorn butter. If your hair has these tones, you can apply a semi-permanent toner to neutralize these shades.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Hair toner in a light shade
  1. Step 1

Buy a toner at your local supermarket or hair care store.

Make sure you buy a toner and not another type of bleach dye. Toners are different from dyes because they are demi-permanent. They last about 4-6 weeks. Because they have less peroxide than regular hair bleach, they are slightly less damaging to your hair.

  2. Step 2

Mix the toner following the manufacturers directions. Be sure to empty all bottles or tubes completely, in order to maintain the manufacturers intended strength.

  3. Step 3

Apply the toner to your hair. Your hair should be dry while you apply the toner. Remember not to get toner, hair bleach, or any other hair dye in your eyes. Follow the recommend directions and timing.

  4. Step 4

Wash the toner out in the shower at the recommend time.

  5. Step 5

Completely dry your hair and examine the shade. Your hair should be lighter and contain less off-tones.

  6. Step 6

If the off-tones are still in your hair, you can repeat the process. However, if they appear stubborn and won't go away, you may need to see a hair care professional, who will use more permanent methods to remove the off tones in your hair.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be careful not to over dye your hair. You run the risk of burning your scalp and breaking and damaging your hair. Keep in mind toner still has hydrogen peroxide in it.

on 11/11/2009 Be careful when using a toner that contains a purple base, or "cool tones". These are often found in Ash shades. When your hair is bleached out, it often will "grab" that base color, leaving your hair looking purple or blue. Be especially careful to start at the top of your hair and work your way down to the ends last, as the ends usually grab color the quickest!
