When shopping for an HDTV have a plan before making any sort of buying decision. Plan out your budget, what size you want to purchase, decide if you want a plasma or lcd HDTV and the features you want. First of all check out the deals sites online such as deals.com and fatwallet.com. HDTV deals pop up all the time on those sites. Also be sure to check on Amazon.com or any other major online electronics site for a great deal.

2
Browse your local electronic stores such as Best Buy and check out the HDTV you want to purchase in person. Keep in mind the settings on HDTVs in retail stores are usually not set at the optimal settings so take that with a grain of salt.

Don't let salesmen talk you into extra features and come into the store knowledgeable, do your homework online beforehand. There is no such thing as "recharging" for a plasma screen HDTV, if you hear that term used then walk away.

Decide what you will use your HDTV for. Plasma vs LCD is a hot debate but both types of HDTVs serve their purposes. Plasma's cost a little less then LCDs but they provide richer darker colors and are great for watching fast moving sports or movies. Plasmas use more energy and are heavier then LCD however. Be an informed shopper before stepping into a retail store.

If you don't need the newest HDTV on the market you can snag a 720p or 1080i HDTV at a great price and still have an amazing HDTV that you and your family will be sure to enjoy. 1080p 120 Hz HDTVs are great, but are not needed for casual TV watching or gaming.

Do not buy the $80 HDMI cables in the retail stores, you can save a lot of money by purchasing one online at a much cheaper price. HDMI cables can be had online for $10-20 and are just as good as the expensive ones in retail stores.
