How to Make Oatmeal Delicious

Everyone agrees that oatmeal is good for you, but if it isn't delicious, who wants it? Here is a simple recipe that makes oatmeal delicious and healthful. You won't believe how good it tastes. This oatmeal has fewer carbs than instant and tastes infinitely better. The key is to use the very best ingredients you can find.
Makes 2 servings

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 cup Quick cooking oats
  • 1 3/4 cups water
  • 1/4 cup pecan or walnut pieces
  • 1/4 cup dried fruit OR 1/2 cup cut-up fresh fruit: apples, berries, or bananas
  • 2 pats butter
  • 2 tsp maple syrup
  • 2 tsp cream
  • cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg or allspice if desired
  1. Step 1

    Put the water in a saucepan and cover. Heat water to boiling on top of the stove. While the water is heating, measure the oats and chop the nuts or dried fruit if necessary. If using fresh fruit: dice or grate apples and other hard fruits; slice bananas and strawberries.

  2. Step 2

    Add oats, fruit and pecans all at once to boiling water. Stir constantly for 1 minute, using a timer. Cover and remove from heat. Let sit for 3-5 minutes.

    Butter

    Place one pat of butter in each of two bowls.

    Stir oatmeal and place half in each bowl on top of the butter.

    Add 1 tsp Maple syrup and 1 tsp cream to each bowl. Mix and enjoy.

Tips & Warnings
  • Cooking the fruit and nuts with the oats gives everything a better flavor.
  • Try adding different spices, including nutmeg, allspice and cinnamon to add interest.
  • Change the ingredients frequently to keep this breakfast fresh and interesting.
  • Try sweetening with molasses
  • Don't substitute margarine or "spreads" for the butter. They may be cheaper, but the goal here is "delicious."
  • Don't substitute pancake syrup for the maple syrup, or you'll end up needing a lot more, and it won't be as good.
