Many runners and racers love large scale marathons and the atmosphere they create. However, large scale marathons typically require the runner to pay an entry fee that is somewhere around $50. In tough economic times, many Americans are cutting out expenses like races. This does not have to happen. Here's how to save money on marathon fees and even get a free entry.

    Contact the race itself and ask who their sponsors are. Many times, they will be sports drink and fitness bar companies, chiropractors, sports shops and shoe companies. Some will be national corporations, while others could be local small businesses trying to get exposure to the active crowd.

    Contact these companies directly and ask about their involvement in the upcoming race. Do they need workers to hand out drinks, t-shirts, or free samples? Sometimes you do not even need to call the company. Check local classifieds for upcoming events. There may be a listing for marathon workers for hire.

  3. Step 3
     

    Discuss compensation with these companies. If you show up at the race early to help them set up booths or stay after to hand out drinks and free samples, they will often offer to pay for your race registration fee. Sometimes, they will even throw in additional freebies and samples for your efforts.
