Highlighting the hair has been a trend that seems to have stuck around for awhile, and will continue to become even more popular in the future. The fastest way to highlight your hair is to pull it through a cap, but for a lot of people, this can be uncomfortable to them, or their hair might be too thick. That's where foil highlights come in. In this article you will learn how to highlight your hair by using hair foils, or simply by using your everyday household aluminum foil.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Special hair foil or aluminum foil
  • A small hair paintbrush to apply the color
  • Hair clips to separate the hair
  • Coloring product
  1. Step 1

Pick or brush your hair. You will need to do this so that it contains no knots. Since brushing your hair can sometimes damage it, especially if your hair is thick, using a pick might be less harmful to your hair.

  2. Step 2

Use the hair clips you have obtained and split the hair into small sections. If you are applying highlights to the top layer only or the bottom layer only, you should tie back the sections you will not be coloring. A regular ponytail holder or scrunchy should do fine for this.

  3. Step 3

Take your first piece of hair that you will be highlighting and brush through it once or twice. Make sure you do not have an extra strand in there from another parted section or it could turn out uneven. You should now place a long strip of aluminum foil underneath the piece of hair, making sure that the top of the foil is touching the top of the piece of hair, pushed up against the scalp.

  4. Step 4

Using the hair paintbrush, begin painting the color mix on by starting at the top of each piece of hair (as close to the scalp as possible without touching it) and slowly dragging it to the end. Then take both sides of the foil and fold them over on the top of the hair. You should now have the whole piece covered and should not be able to see any of it.

  5. Step 5

Repeat this process. As you go along, you need to keep check on the other strips of foil in the hair to make sure it is still firmly in place. When finished coloring, let your hair sit for approximately 25-35 minutes then wash and blow dry. Some people strip the color mix from the hair before washing, with a bath towel. However, this is not recommended because it can break and damage the hair.

Tips & Warnings
  • Pick or comb your hair before highlighting. Brushing the hair can cause breakage.
  • Always use conditioner when washing it after adding highlights to keep it healthy and shiny.
  • When drying, don't hold your hair dryer close to your head or your hair will look fried, especially those new gorgeous highlights.
  • Don't add too much coloring or it won't settle in completely and you will have some highlights more vibrant than others.
  • Keep completed pieces of hair separate from each other. If some are too close together it can cause blotting and will make your hair appear to have spots.

on 7/11/2009 I have done all the instructions and followed them well. The procedure went well other than the fact that the bleaching powder I used inflated and bled out of the foil and created spots.

And when doing long hair although I brushed the bleach through the hair it still came out with spots inside the foil.
What did I do wrong?
