How to Apply for a Job With the Postal Service
The United States Postal Service (USPS) is a federal delivery service. It has provided delivery of packages, letters and other correspondence since 1775, when Benjamin Franklin was named the first postmaster general. The USPS has to fill many types of positions, including mail carriers, mail sorting and processing, customer service, human resources, accounting and administrative positions. You can apply for a job with the postal service online at the USPS website.

Meet the basic requirements for employment with the USPS. You must be at least 18 years old and a citizen or legal immigrant. You also must be able to read and write English proficiently. Men who were born on or after Jan. 1, 1960, must register with the Selective Service System, which serves as a listing of able-bodied men who the government can draft during war times. All applicants must be able to pass a drug test to be considered for employment with the postal service.

Go to the USPS website. Click the "Careers" link at the bottom of the homepage. Click "Search Jobs Online" on the next page.

Enter specific skills or positions in the "keyword" text box if you know exactly what job you desire. In not, select your state, enter your ZIP code and choose the type of job you want from the scrolling menu. Select more than one state or job type by holding the "Shift" key as you click. Click the "Start" button to begin the job search.

Click a search result to see information about the job, including location, duties, hours, salary and qualifications, in a pop-up window. If you are not interested in the job, click the "X" in the top right corner of the window to close it and go back to the search results. If you want to apply for the job, click the "Apply" button at the top of the window.

Enter your first name, last name and email address to create a profile with the USPS e-career online job system. Check the box to indicate you have read and agree to the privacy policy and click the "Save and Continue" button.

Enter information about your work history, education and skills on the following pages. Include information that pertains to the job for which you are applying. For instance, if you are applying for a mail carrier job, highlight your experience in deliveries and customer service. If you are applying for a mail sorter job, emphasize your shipping and receiving experience and organizational skills.

Review the data you entered on the final screen. Click the "Submit" button to complete the application.

Wait for the USPS to contact you. If you have to take a test to continue the application process, the USPS will send you an email giving you instructions.
