Hey, it happens! Lice is a nasty bug that gets in the hair and makes you itch. (I'm itching just thinking about it!) But it's fairly common and can happen to every person of all walks of life. Reading the following steps on how to get rid of lice and to help prevent the spread of lice, should help you sleep better at night!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • plastic bags
  • dryer
  • vacuum
  • lice treatment or
  • mayonnaise, butter or eggs
  • lice comb
  1. Step 1

Read about all myths and truths about lice. Myth: They can't jump from head to head. Myth: Only people who don't take care of personal hygiene get lice. Truth: Sharing hats, combs, hoods on coats, etc can spread lice. Truth: Nits grip to frequently washed hair better.

  2. Step 2

If you discover someone in your household with lice you should treat everything and everyone at the same time. Start by ripping a hole in the bottom of a plastic garbage bag to use as smocks.

  3. Step 3

You can buy lice treatments over the counter that come with a fine tooth lice comb. Treat the affected person and everyone else in the household as directed on the box. Beware of lice treatments with kidney disorders and pregnancy - as they contain chemicals that can be absorbed through the body. In this case, you can use homemade treatments such as mayonnaise, eggs, butter or lard. All this does is saturate the hair and help you to comb the lice nits out. Apply thick amounts of these homemade remedies and let it sit on the hair for an hour with a plastic shower cap before combing through.

  4. Step 4

While everyone's hair is being treated, strip all beds of sheets, pillows, blankets, etc. Take all coats and hats too. Put everything in a hot dryer. You can also put everything in garbage bags and take them to commercial dryers. Vacuum everything: carpets, rugs, floors, mattresses, etc.

  5. Step 5

Throw away anything that you can't clean or sterilize especially hair bows and scrunchies.

  6. Step 6

Reinforce to everyone not to share hats, hoods, hair brushes, etc.

  7. Step 7

Recheck everyone one week after treatments and reapply all methods again if necessary.

Tips & Warnings
  • Treat the entire household
  • Beware of chemical treatments with pregnancy and kidney disorders
  • Seek physician's advice before using chemical treatments
