The first step to housebreaking is to pay attention to what you are feeding your puppy. New puppy owners are told by dog food companies and veterinarians to feed their puppies four times a day. This is a huge mistake; feeding a puppy four times a day will make it difficult, if not impossible to housebreak your puppy. Your puppy has a very short digestive tract and feeding your puppy four times a day will result in setting your puppy up for failure. The foolproof method for housebreaking puppies is to always set up the puppy for success, not failure.

Once your puppy is on a twice-a-day feeding schedule, you will want to start using a crate. A crate is a tool that helps you manage your puppy's behavior when you cannot watch your puppy.

When you need to leave the house or even the room, never leave your puppy unattended until he is completely housetrained. Another excellent management tool is a baby gate. A baby gate can keep the puppy in the room with you so you can catch your puppy in the act if she starts to have an accident.

Setting your puppy up for success instead of failure requires that you take your puppy outside on a regular schedule. You always want to take your puppy outside before he has an accident inside. You'll start to learn when your puppy needs to go out. Keep a real close eye on your puppy after he has just eaten, chewed, played or drank some water. You should bring your puppy outside 10 minutes after any of these activities.
-

If your puppy has an accident, using the foolproof method you'll always be there with your puppy. If you catch your puppy making a mistake, simply interrupt the behavior and quickly bring your puppy outside.
-
6
Never leave your puppy outside unattended. You always want to go with your puppy so you can reward the second she is finished. Be sure not to reward too fast; you don't want to interrupt your puppy before she has finished.

It's important that everyone in the house is consistent with the puppy's housebreaking. If there is no consistency, it will take a much longer time to housebreak. Consistency is the name of the game. Good luck!
