Step 1
Be aware of your surroundings. Celebrities usually choose dresses that will look good with the color red. This means of course that they opt for red, black, gold, silver or white. If an actress wears fuchsia, it doesn't matter how good her dress looks, it will still clash. If your event is being held at a place with a bright color palette try & blend with the most dominate color.

Step 2
Go Old Hollywood. This year at the Oscars, it seemed like every red carpet dress had a train attached to it. You will need to practice walking in this dress to make sure that you can turn properly to give the photographers that coy smile.
-
Step 3
Go all out. A red carpet dress usually is over the top. There are layers of tulle for a voluminous ball gown. Never stop yourself because you think that something is too much. The best thing to ask yourself is if something looks good on you or not. Don't follow the trends, set them.
-
Step 4
Don't forget the glitz. You probably don't have jewelers to provide you with thousands of dollars worth of diamonds. Some of the celebrities even have bodyguards follow them around all night to guard their earrings. Go for a unique natural stone or even just plain sterling silver. There will still be plenty of sparkle & you can wear it with more casual outfits later on.
-
Step 5
Shop on a budget. If you have a formal event coming up, plan well in advance. You can often find prom dresses marked down to $20 at department stores. These usually hit clearance after the holidays, or during the summer. There are entire clothing lines that exist solely on reproducing the hottest Oscar looks on a budget.

Step 6
The red carpet dress is only half the battle. Make sure that your skin is flawless & that your hair doesn't have any fly aways to complete the award ceremony look.
