Things You'll Need:
- your eyes
- your hands

Step 1
First you need to know when to buy grapefruit. Citrus season is in the winter, so that is when you should be choosing grapefruit. It doesn't make sense to buy fruit out of season-the shorter the distance fruit travels the better it will be.
-
Step 2
Use your eyes. Look for grapefruit that have nice smooth skins. Avoid those that are bumpy since they are already "over the hill." This might take a few extra moments to sift through all the bumpy ones, but why buy a dry grapefruit?! Not always, but most of the time the bumpy skinned grapefruit are slightly larger than the smooth skinned ones.

Step 3
Use your hands. Pick up the grapefruit. It should be heavy for it's size. If you are not sure what "heavy" is, pick up a grapefruit that is all bumpy in one hand, and then pick up one that is smooth skinned in the other hand. You should be able to recognized the weight difference. A fruit that is heavy for its size will have a higher juice content.
