Step 1
Think about your playstyle. Some kinships focus on endgame raids and high-level instances, while others are more relaxed and casual. Others are very social and hold serverwide contests. What kind of player are you?
-
Step 2
Consider time zones. If you're on the West Coast while most of your kinmates are East Coast-based, you may often find yourself alone during your peak playing hours since they've already gone to bed.
-
Step 3
Research potential kinships online. Many kinships advertise on the official LOTRO forums (http://forums.lotro.com/). Find your server on that list, click the "Kinships" link, and start reading! Some kinship leaders and members will include a link to their website, so check those out as well.
-
Step 4
It's common to join a kinship based on experience in a PuG (pick-up group). If you enjoyed grouping with some of your PuG members, check out their kin name, add them to your friends list, and group with them again. With a little luck you'll join one of their kinships.
-
Step 5
Understand a kinship's rules before joining. Some set age limits or ask its members not to swear while chatting, while others have detailed rules in terms of raiding. If you disagree with the rules then that kinship is not for you.
-
Step 6
Some kinships offer a trial period in that its officers group a few times with a potential member. While they're checking you out, size them up as well. Do you see yourself playing with these people?
