This article will show how to unclog a drain using a drain blaster. A drain blaster is a rubber bulb with a hose connection on one end and with an opening on the other end. With the blaster shoved down the drain and hose connected and turned on it swells up to form a tight seal and shoots a pulsating stream of water down the drain which breaks the clog loose and flushes it on down the drain.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Drain blaster. There are three different sizes.

This is what a bulb looks like when the water has been turned on and it has swollen up and is in the process of blasting.

  2. Step 2

This picture shows one type of drain clean out opening that can be used. Additionally the blasters can be used in almost an infinite variety of ways to unclog a drain. They are most effective if the whole blaster is placed within the drain pipe so it can swell up and seal properly.

  3. Step 3
    Large drain clean out.

Shove the blaster with the hose connected in the drain a foot or so. Turn the water on and let run a minute or two until the clog is removed. Connecting to the hot water is ideal if that is possible.

  5. Step 5

Replace the plug and job is done.

Tips & Warnings
  • Blasters can be found at most plumbing supply places.
  • Be sure the blaster is in the drain before the water is turned on.
