Learn how to create a lucrative mail order business working right in your own home on a part-time basis, only on the weekends, or jump right in as a full-time business.

  1. Step 1

    Before you start, you need to do some research. The following steps can be used for starting any type of small business. Here we go.

  2. Step 2

    Choose a business name.

  3. Step 3

    Go to the county clerk's office in your town and fill out a "doing business as" application so you can open a bank account in your business's name.

  4. Step 4

    Create a marketing plan that details how you will attract business.

  5. Step 5

    Review accounting and/or bookkeeping techniques. Choose one that is the best for you to use.

    Contact your town's SBA. Find out if there are any "how to start a small business" seminars, programs, or someone who can guide you.

  7. Step 7

    Contact community colleges or look online to see if they offer any seminars in starting businesses or entrepreneurship.

    Buy or borrow books on marketing and advertising.

  9. Step 9

    Create a great business plan that will detail every aspect of your business. This will help if you have to apply for a loan.

    Make sure your business plan includes details to grow your business. One year? Two years? Five years?
