Sugar can be addictive

Did you know that on average, Americans consume 140 lbs. of sugar per person per year? Sugar can be very addictive, causing intense cravings and creating a roller coaster of emotions and energy levels. Read on for some top ways to reduce sugar cravings.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

One way to reduce sugar cravings is to substitute whole grain flours and pastas for "white" ones. White breads, pasta, and rice are simple carbs that are quickly converted to sugar in the body. Whereas complex carbs such as brown rice, millet, barley, or whole grain wheat, are made up of long chain simple sugars that require a longer digestion time to be absorbed. This allows sugars to be released more slowly, supplying our bodies with steadier, long lasting energy. This eliminates the cycle of quick energy highs followed by crashes that cause us to crave more sugar.

  2. Step 2

Combine sweet foods with ones that are not. For example, mix granola with an unsweetened whole grain cereal and nuts. Add water or club soda to juice, or try mixing a little water into your honey. This will reduce the total amount of sugar that you consume, and you won't feel like you are depriving yourself of something sweet. After awhile, a bite of "pure" granola will taste cloyingly sweet.

  3. Step 3

Add natural, unprocessed, whole foods into your diet. Fruits, vegetables, and legumes will have some naturally occurring sugars, but they are also full of nutrients and fiber which help stabilize your blood sugar. This in turn helps reduce your sugar cravings. So have an apple instead of apple juice.

  4. Step 4

If that square of chocolate has your name written all over it, then choose dark chocolate over milk, and try combining it with a protein such as peanut butter to slow the absorption of sugar in your system. If you follow these steps, you should reduce your sugar cravings in no time!
