Make an Easy Tomatillo Salsa Verde
Make an Easy Tomatillo Salsa Verde

Tomatillo Salsa Verde (tomatillo green salsa) is one of my favorite salsas. This is how to make an easy tomatillo salsa verde that packs a lot of flavor and just enough "kick" for fun.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 4-6 Tomatillos
  • 2 Poblanos
  • 2-4 Green Chili Peppers
  • 2-4 Jalapenos
  • 1 Onion
  • 3 Cloves of Garlic
  • Kosher Salt
  • Sugar
  • Pot of Water
  1. Step 1

Peel your tomatillos. Tomatillos are a mildly hot pepper, which look a bit like a tomato wrapped in green paper. (Many grocery stores classify it as a tomato, as a matter of fact.) You will want 4-6 decent-sized tomatillos. Peel off the paper skin. The tomatillos will feel "sticky," so just wash thoroughly. Toss into a pot of water.

  2. Step 2
    Poblanos
    Poblanos

Add rest of hot peppers. You really do not need to cut up your hot peppers. Just cut off the stems and add the whole peppers to your pot of water. I use jalapenos, green chili peppers, and poblanos. (I especially like the flavor that poblanos seem to impart to the salsa. They are also relatively mild in terms of heat, so do not be afraid.) You can add any other type of hot green pepper that you wish.

  3. Step 3

Peel and quarter your onion. Use whatever type of onion you like but make sure that it is a fairly good size. I prefer vidalias or red onions.

  4. Step 4

Add about 3 peeled cloves of garlic. You can add more or less, depending on your taste buds.

  5. Step 5

Gently boil your peppers, onions, and garlic until the tomatillos turn from their original bright green color to a dull green. Drain and place everything into a blender. Add some kosher salt to taste. (I have found that kosher salt adds a much better flavor to salsas than any other type of salt.) Also, add about a tablespoon of sugar. Blend until smooth and serve.

Tips & Warnings
  • While I do not believe that this salsa is that hot, others might disagree with me. You can lower the level of heat by using less jalapenos and/or using milder hot chilis.
  • If you think you have taken a bite that is just too hot, drink milk to put out the fire.
  • This is a wonderful salsa to eat to clear up your sinuses!
