      Get a high school diploma.

      Train yourself physically by engaging in a strength training and cardiovascular endurance program.

      Apply for a civil service examination.

      Take the physical exam, lie detector tests and drug tests conducted by the police department.

      Graduate from police academy.

      Spend two years as a patrol officer.

    • 7

      Pursue further education and do your job as a patrol officer well. Make it known that you would like to be part of an investigative unit. Demonstrate your interpersonal skills, knowledge of local laws and your analytical abilities.

      Continue working and hope for the transfer to a new squad.
