Protected Seedling in a Rainstorm
Protected Seedling in a Rainstorm

After your seedlings have been hardened off and in the garden, bad weather may still strike. This article will show you how to protect your new growth from rainy weather and how to deal with unexpected frost.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Glass Jars or Cups
  • Bad Weather
  1. Step 1

Check the weather. Continually monitor your areas weather forecast. If you know bad weather is coming before it hits, you'll have time to prepare and your plants will thank you. See Additional Resources (below) for great weather links.

  2. Step 2

Cover up. Use a Mason Jar or a pint glass to cover the seedling. This will keep it from getting beaten up by heavy rain and keep it warm throughout a cold night. Make sure that the jar is firmly in the ground so wind doesn't knock it over. Plastic two liter bottles that are cut in half work as well, make sure to use clear ones.

  3. Step 3

Watch the weather report for a hard freeze. If possible bring plants inside. If not put a towel or sheet on top of the jars for extra protection.

Tips & Warnings
  • Save empty jars. Labels can be soaked off in warm soapy water and will have a million uses around your house.
