Things You'll Need:
- Nursing cover
- Nursing bra
- Button-down blouse or nursing top
-
Step 1
The law is on your side. According to Wikipedia, forty-seven states have laws which allow women to breastfeed their children in public. The reality is that some people might feel uncomfortable seeing a mother feed her child in public, but it really is not considered indecent exposure because the baby needs to fed and mothers cannot predict when their child will need nourishment. The best way to handle the awkwardness of breastfeeding in public is to find a private area to breastfeed. This might not be possible in every situation, but it will make the experience more comfortable for you and your baby until you get used to the idea of feeding your baby in public.
-
Step 2
Cover up! Breastfeeding in public doesn't necessarily mean that you have to expose your breast to strangers. There are plenty of ways to breastfeed your baby while maintaining your privacy. There are nursing covers available to moms in all types of colors and designs. Nursing covers are designed to be put on like an apron and they cover the breast area while you breastfeed your baby. Some nursing covers can even be used as blankets too! Most covers are usually about $35. If you don't like the idea of having your baby under a cover, you can use a breastfeeding hat which only covers the baby's head and your breast area. With so many options available, no mom should ever feel uncomfortable about breastfeeding her baby.
-
Step 3
Be prepared. Wear nursing tops or blouses that will make it easy for your baby to access her food source. This will help you and your baby feel more comfortable. If you are on a budget, you can buy a Belly Hugger instead of nursing tops. Belly Huggers are designed to wear under a regular shirt and they cover your belly while you breastfeed. Wear a nursing bra too. You don't want to make it more difficult to feed your baby in public by wearing clothes that can't be easily adjusted.

on 2/23/2009 Thank you so much for writing this article. If I could give you more than 5 stars on this one I would. I breastfed my daughter for 7 months, at which time I was not making enough milk for her. I did have to breastfeed in public often, and I have seen the looks people give. It was sometimes hard to hide myself while doing it too. I hope this article can help many new and expecting mothers. 5* and recommended. :)
