How to Make a HDR Photo with a Nikon D40
This is an easy step by step way to make a HDR (high dynamic range) photo with a Nikon D40. You can take a HDR photo using three or more photo. My step by step will show a five frame HDR. You will definitely want to use a tripod

Put your camera on a tripod. Find the image that you want to take.
Set your camera in aperture priority mode. (A on the dial). -

Take your first photo.

Hold the exposure compensation button, and rotate the command dial 6 clicks to the left. (+2.0).

Take second photo.

Hold the exposure compensation button, and rotate the dial 3 clicks to the right. (+1.0)

Take third photo.

Hold the exposure compensation button, and rotate the dial 6 clicks to the right. (-1.0)

Take fourth photo.

Hold exposure compensation button, and rotate the dial 3 clicks to the right. (-2.0)

Take fifth and final photo.

Download your images to (what i use) photomatrix. To generate a hdr image.

Tips & Warnings
In order to accomplish this you will have to use a tripod. To make things easier you can use only a three photo shot. (+1.0, 0, -1.0).You can also take a seven photo image just put the exposure compensation to +3.0 and -3.0 along with steps shown above.

I know someone who has a Nikon D40 and you wouldn't believe the crisp action shots he gets of his dogs, even in splashing water. On my wish list. -
