This article is about how to file a restraining order for free in Los Angeles.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Text messages, voice mails, letters covered in animal blood, pictures of dead birds left on your doorstep, etc.
  1. Step 1

Use your favorite method of transport to arrive at the Van Nuys Courthouse. If you have never used public transportation, then park your car at the North Hollywood Metro, cross the street, and take a ride on the Or-ange line. Get off at the Van Nuys stop. Or drive. Directions can be found at www.lasupercourt.org.

  2. Step 2

Once you arrive at the courthouse, you will need to go through security. Remember to leave all beauty implements at home, e.g., tweezers, electrolysis machines and melted hot wax. Don't bring a loofah, either, because that just looks strange to the guards. Once inside, kindly ask the gentleman or lady guard to direct you to the self-help legal center. Generally there are two time slots per day where you can speak to someone regarding your case -- a morning and an afternoon time slot. Arrive early and if you have to wait, grab a kosher beef hot dog at the awesome vendor downstairs at front or check out the library for your latest intellectual conquest if you so desire.

  3. Step 3

Speak to a representative and complete the required paperwork. Aren't you glad you left your loofah at home?

  4. Step 4

File the paperwork with the clerk. With the exception of a few circumstances, it is free to file and serve a temporary restraining order. The clerk will direct you to the appropriate courtroom.

  5. Step 5

Step into the courtroom. Here you will present your paperwork to the judge's clerk. After a short wait, the judge will review your paperwork and might ask for any accompanying documents, photos or voice mails. Answer his questions and be very respectful, addressing him/her as Your Honor. Depending on the judge, this can take anywhere from 5-15 minutes depending on the matter of the case and the legal suggestions or guidance you received from the self-help legal center. Did I mention that I am not a lawyer and am not giving you any legal advice? Good, I did. All of this information is provided, reiterated and regurgitated for you through the self-help center at the courthouse.

  6. Step 6

Visit the L.A. Sheriff's office in the next building in order to effect service on the bad guy. You will need appropriate information like the address, etc. Make sure to keep a record of any further harassment and keep your court date if assigned one by the judge.

Tips & Warnings
  • Park in a safe area that is well-lit until all harassment has stopped.
  • Do not drink anything in a public area that fizzes as you pick it up to put to your mouth.
  • I am not an attorney and am not representing myself as an attorney. I am merely directing you to free resources within the community.
