Step 1
Log in to you Gmail account using your username and password. Once you're in your inbox open the message you are curious about.

Step 2
To get to the senders IP address you need to see the headers in the message. This can be done by clicking the small upside down triangle next to the word "Reply"

Search through the text for the word "Received: from" after this there will be a set of brackets [] inside this there will be the IP address of the sender. If there is more then one use the last one.
For example if you see this in the text:
Received: from [49.208.20.1] by web21504.mail.mud.yahoo.com
49.208.20.1 is the IP Address of the sender. -
Step 4
If you want to trace the IP address to the city where it came from copy and paste the address to this website.

on 8/19/2009 this doesn't appear to work for gmail as the title states, as google don't forward the intial X-from or Recipients header that has the users IP address
The example uses yahoo's webmail service
