How to Replace a Garden Tub Drain
A garden tub is a large free-standing tub that measures twice the size of a standard tub. A garden tub may have jets built into it to give the feel of a Jacuzzi. When replacing a garden tub drain, it is important to keep in mind that the drainage system is the same as a standard tub. The drain itself threads into a waste pipe located beneath the bottom of the tub's basin. Does this Spark an idea?

Locate the screw or screws that secure the strainer to the top of the drain. Remove the screws with a screwdriver and then place the strainer off to the side. In some cases, you will see a single screw in the center of the strainer and in other cases you will see two screws, one on each outside edge.

Place the jaws on your needle nose pliers through the X-bracing located inside the drain and then slip a screwdriver between the handles.

Push against the screwdriver to turn the X-bracing counterclockwise. This rotates the pliers and the drain counterclockwise to unthread the drain from the waste pipe.

Scrape the old plumber's putty off the basin of the garden tub with a scraper and then wipe it clean with a rag.

Apply a bead of plumber's putty around the hole in the basin for the drain.

Thread the replacement drain into the waste pipe by hand until you cannot tighten it any further.

Place the pliers into the X-bracing and turn the pliers with the screwdriver to complete the drain tightening.

Wipe away any excess plumber's putty that squeezes out as you tighten the drain with a rag.

Place the strainer cover over the drain and press it into the drain with your thumbs. You will feel the strainer pop into place. Using the screwdriver and screws, secure the strainer in place.
