How to Make a Canopy Tent
On hot summer afternoons, you probably seek out cool, shady places to take a break and enjoy a cool drink. Even if you don't have a convenient tree or awning for solar protection, don't resign yourself to going inside. Instead, build a simple, elegant outdoor canopy. It can provide a shaded place for reflection, and you can also set up picnic tables or hammocks underneath to really make your yard the place to be. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- 4 8-foot wooden poles
- Electric hand drill
- ¼-inch diameter drill bit
- 8 screw-end hooks
- Nylon rope
- Stepladder
- Canvas cloth with grommeted corners
- 4 tent spikes
- Rubber mallet
Instructions

1
Drill one ¼-inch-wide hole on either side of each pole, spacing the holes about 1 inch from one end of the poles. The holes should be on the same end of each pole.
-
2
Screw a screw-end hook into each hole. When finished, each pole should look like a T with curly-top arms.

3
Choose a space for your canopy. You should have a colorful, broad view from your chosen space. Areas partially shielded from the elements by a fence or your home work well.
-
4
Tie a 6-foot length of nylon rope to one of the hooks on each pole. Push the poles about 1.5 feet down into the ground. Shake the poles a little to ensure they're well-seated.
-
5
Climb onto a stepladder and slip one grommet in each corner of your canvas over the free hook on each of your poles. Canvases made to cover truck beds often come with grommets already along the sides and in the corners.
-
6
Pound a tent spike into the ground about 3 feet from the base of each pole. Tie the rope from each pole around a tent spike, tightening the rope enough that the canvas becomes taut.
