Buy one or two GMAT study guides (Kaplan, Princeton Review, or the GMAC Official Guides) and download the free adaptive practice test from the mba.com website. Give yourself a week to review material and then take a practice test to see where you stand.
Taking a practice GMAT at the beginning of your studies will give you a good idea of which areas you need to work on. You can also gauge if your timing and pacing needs work.

Create a study schedule that you can follow strictly for at least a month. For every 10 points you lag behind your target GMAT score, you need at least an half an hour of studying per week. If your GMAT practice exam score is 580 and you need a 720 for your top choice business school, then you need to study at least 7 hours per week.

If your are not within 40 points of your target GMAT score by the end of a month, the next step is to sign up for a GMAT prep course or hire a private tutor. Your prep course instructor or tutor can help you write better essays for the analytical writing assessment, and he or she can teach you how to answer the questions more efficiently.

Keep in mind that the GMAT is a beatable test. The pool of questions is finite and they follow the same basic form. On the GMAT verbal section, the more you practice, the more you will learn what the GMAT is looking for in the correct answers. You will also pick up patterns of wrong answer choices.
On the GMAT quantitative section, you will also find that the same mathematical concepts are tested again and again.
