There are a few steps you can take to make sure your torrents are downloading as fast as they can. Follow these steps to make sure your torrents are optimized.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

To achieve a fast torrent download, you must have a good internet connection. A wired connection is preferred as this removes one point of failure, however, if you must connect via wireless, make sure your signal strength is good and your connection does not drop.

  2. Step 2

If you are behind a router or access point, make sure to setup port forwarding between your gateway and your computer. This is necessary to directly connect with your seeds. See the resource section if you aren't sure how to port forward.

  3. Step 3

Configure your torrent client to limit your uploads. While it is important to seed, if all of your bandwidth is used up uploading to others, then you don't have much left to download with.

  4. Step 4

Choose a different port for your torrent client to use. This option is usually listed in the preferences section of your client. Many ISPs rate limit traffic by port. If you use a non-standard port, then your traffic has a better chance of going undetected by your ISP.

  5. Step 5

Enable protocol encryption for your torrent client. This obscures the packet headers so that your traffic is not categorized and rate limited by your ISP. Check the resources section for a link to learn how.

  6. Step 6

When selecting a torrent to download, always select the one with the most seeds.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some may advocate hacking the tcp/ip settings if you use winxp or vista, however this kills the preventive mechanism built into windows that mitigates damage if you are infected with a virus so I do not advocate this hack.
