Step 1
At feeding time fill your dogs bowl with food. Hold the bowl over the dogs head. The natural tendency is for the dog to sit.
-
Step 2
Once the dog sits, say sit and good dog in a positive tone then give the dog their food.
-
Step 3
As your dog starts to get the idea start to say sit before the dog sits and then praise when they do sit.
-
Step 4
By now your dog will start to sit once they hear the food bowl being filled. Now transfer the skill to treats using the same method.
-
Step 5
Once your dog is sitting on command for treats and food start to break up the reward of treats to verbal praise. You don't want to have your dog only sit for a treat and this helps them get ready for more training derived from praise.
