How long does it take to cook a steak in the oven? Not everyone has a grill and although grilling steak is the traditional method, it is not always possible or desired. Use the information below to cook a delicious steak dinner in the oven for friends and family.

Things You'll Need:

  • Skillet
  • Baking Pan
  • Meat Thermometer
  • Tongs
  • Salt, Pepper, Olive Oil, Butter, Garlic
  1. Step 1

    Heat your oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit.

    * It will take approx. 20 minutes for your oven to heat.

    Prepare your Steak Cut. Rub seasonings and olive oil into each side of meat.

    * Many chefs will rub into their steak cut butter and garlic. Season to your specific taste, experimenting on this part will not hurt you.

    Heat your skillet on the Stove top on high temperature.

    * If it begins to smoke, let it cool before starting to cook.

    * You will know when it is time to flip when the bottom of the steak ranges from golden to dark brown, with only a little gray undertone.
    * Do not flip with fork as this will allow juices to escape and will effect the flavor - use tongs instead.

    Turn steak over and transfer to a baking dish and put in oven.

    Now, how long does it take to cook a steak in the oven? It depends on how thick the steak is and how you like your steak (rare, medium rare, medium well, well done).

    The ultimate tool will be your meat thermometer and your sense of touch.

    * Rare - cook steak to an internal temperature of 120 degrees fahrenheit. It will feel soft and spongy. Cook for 2 minutes, then check temperature. Continue to cook at 2 minute intervals until internal temperature is correct.

    * Medium Rare - cook steak to an internal temperature of 125 degrees Fahrenheit. It will feel springy, but firm. Cook for 2 minutes, then check temperature. Continue to cook at 2 minute intervals until internal temperature is correct.

    * Medium - cook steak to an internal temperature of 135 degrees Fahrenheit. It will feel springy and more firm than medium rare. Cook for 3 minutes, then check temperature. Continue to cook at 2 minute intervals until internal temperature is correct.

    * Medium Well - cook steak to an internal temperature of 145 degrees Fahrenheit. It will feel firm. Cook for 4 minutes, then check temperature. Continue to cook at 2 minute intervals until internal temperature is correct.


    * Well Done - cook steak to an internal temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit. It will feel firm and unyielding. Cook for 5 minutes, then check temperature. Continue to cook at 2 minute intervals until internal temperature is correct.

    Take steak out of oven and allow to rest for 5-10 minutes. This allows juices to settle.

    *Enjoy your oven cooked steak dinner.

Tips & Warnings
  • Choosing a great steak cut can really make a difference. If you have a choice, rib eye steak is recommended for its tenderness and rich flavor. Other great choices with less fat include Delmonico or NY cut.
