Are you ready to pump up the roots of your curly hair for a night out on the town? Here's how to use a hair diffuser to add volume at the roots.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

If you have natural curl or wave in your hair, you don’t have to worry about the flat, limp look that makes fine, straight hair such a challenge to style. But sometimes when you’re going out for a special evening, you might want to add a little extra volume to the roots of your hair for a touch of nighttime drama. This is easy to do if you have access to a hair diffuser and a few hair products.

  2. Step 2

A hair diffuser can be a godsend if you have naturally curly or wavy hair. Not only is it a healthier way to dry hair, but it also helps to reduce the tendency towards frizziness that’s so common with wavy hair. Instead of frizzy, out-of-control curls, you get soft, smooth, healthy looking waves. It’s also a good way to add additional lift and volume to the crown of your hair, giving you that “big hair” look for a special evening out. Here’s how to use a diffuser hair dryer
to add volume to your hair.

  3. Step 3

Start by shampooing and conditioning your hair. If you have course, wavy hair, use a conditioner designed specifically for curly hair to reduce frizziness. If your hair is particularly unruly, consider using a light, leave-in conditioner for a smoother, more controlled look. Towel dry your hair lightly without being too aggressive. When you’re ready to dry your hair, add a root lifting product to the roots of your hair to give extra holding power.

  4. Step 4

To create root volume, throw your hair over your head so that you’re drying from the underside. Hold the hair diffuser over the underside of your hair and gently start to scrunch the hair around the roots as it dries. When it’s almost dry, flip your hair back over your head and allow it to finish drying naturally. The root lift should help to hold the added height you created using the hair diffuser and the scrunching motions. Once your hair dries completely, it should have added height at the crown with smooth, controlled, healthy looking waves.

  5. Step 5

If you don’t have a diffuser hair dryer, you can buy one from a beauty supply store or online. As an alternative, you can simply get a diffuser attachment that fits onto the end of your hairdryer to turn it into a hair diffuser. If you have curly or wavy hair, you’ll find yourself using this attachment again and again to reduce frizziness and keep your waves under control. A hair diffuser is a fantastic way to add root volume while keeping the rest of your hair smooth and polished.
