The first thing you need to do is decide which software you want to design your label in. If you are an advanced user, you can use Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Photoshop Elements, or Paint Shop Pro. There is also a free program called GIMP.

Next, you need to choose what size of labels you want to use. You can visit your local office supply store to see if there are any pre-stick labels available in the right size. The only drawback of this type of label is that they are harder to get off in case you want to reuse your bottles.

If you don't want to use pre-stick labels, then you may want to purchase labels online that are specifically made to be used on beer bottles. You can do a web search for "beer bottle labels" to find these stores.

Once you know what size the label will be, then you need to set up your document in your chosen graphics software so that it is the correct size (such as 3 inches by 4 inches).

    • 5

Design your label using the text tools and any free or commercial clip art that will enhance your design. Be creative! Don't forget to come up with a catchy name for your beer and include your name and the date the beer was brewed.

Once you are satisfied with your design, then it's time to print the labels! Follow the instructions with any labels you purchased as far as setting up the page to print multiple copies at once. You may need to export your design into a .jpg and use the label functions in Word to get them spaced correctly. You can also create a new document that is 8.5 x 11 inches in size and copy and paste as many labels as you can onto the sheet before printing.

After the labels are printed, it's time to apply them to the bottle. This is really easy if you purchased sticky labels! Now, hand out your beer to your friends and they will be very impressed!

Tips & Warnings

  • Another alternative is to print the final label in color and take it to the copy shop to be photocopied in color. This will make the label waterproof and you can stick it on the bottle with water soluble stick glue, which can be easily removed later.

  • Make sure to put the appropriate warnings on your label and about the natural sediment that occurs in home brewed beer.
