If you are already saving money by bringing your own lunch to work or school, you can save even more by making a reusable lunch bag. Quit tossing those ugly brown paper bags every day. Start carrying your lunch in style.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Outdoor or waterproof fabric (about 2 yards) 10-by-10 inch cardboard square 16 inches of ribbon, trim or leather strips
  1. Step 1

Purchase enough outdoor or waterproof fabric to make four rectangles of 18-by-10 inches and one square of 10-by-10 inches. You can use a regular fabric, but using outdoor fabric means that your lunch bag will be much more durable and can handle spills.

  2. Step 2

Cut the material into the shapes and sizes specified in Step 1, and trim any loose threads off the edges.

  3. Step 3

Sew the four rectangles together on the long sides, so that you end up with one long piece. Do not sew the last piece together yet.

  4. Step 4

Fold and pin down one side (one of the long sides) of the piece you just created. Sew a straight seam along the end to create a hem.

  5. Step 5

Sew the remaining two (short) sides of the long piece together to create a rectangular tube. Make sure the outward facing fabric is the right side, and the wrong side of the fabric is on the inside of the rectangular tube.

  6. Step 6

Pin the square piece of fabric to one end of the rectangular tube, so that the right side is on the bottom. Use a needle and thread to sew the square piece onto the rectangular tube.

  7. Step 7

Cut out a 10-by-10 piece of cardboard and slide it down onto the bottom of the lunch bag.

  8. Step 8

Use ribbon, decorative trim or pieces of leather to create handles. Cut into two equal lengths (about 8 inches each). Sew each piece onto opposite sides of the bag to create two handles.
