Things You'll Need:
- crochet hook
- yarn or colored thread
- scissors
- yarn needle
-
Step 1
First, you'll want to get a little experience crocheting appliques. Do a Google search for free patterns and thousands of patterns for virtually any shape you can imagine are one more click away. Make a few different geometric shapes such as circles, squares, and rectangles, then try a flower or butterfly or two.
-
Step 2
Now, take a look at the appliques you just crocheted. Do you notice anything similar about them? You might remember from the patterns that most of them start out the same way: chain a few stitches, join with a slip stitch to form a loop, and then start working stitches in that loop.
-
Step 3
When you have decided what kind of shape you want to make yourself, think about where that center loop would be located in your shape. Some shapes may even have more than one center loop, such as a snowman (3, of varying sizes) or a teddy bear (a large one for the body, a smaller one for the head, and two tiny ones for ears).
-
Step 4
Using chain stitches, slip stitches, double, half-double, and triple crochet stitches, work around the center loop to form your desired shape.
-
Step 5
Don't get discouraged if your first few appliques don't resemble what you had in mind. "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again!" That's the beauty of crochet- you don't waste yarn because you can always rip it out and re-use it!
-
Step 6
If, after a few attempts, you are unable to crochet your applique shape, go ahead and do another search online for a similar pattern. Compare what you tried with the pattern you found. You learn more from your mistakes than you will from getting it right every time. Good luck!
