The latest craze in the grocery store has been panini. They are delicious, melted sandwiches, and sometimes are made with healthy fixings - but tend to be a bit pricey for what you get. Why not make panini yourself at home, using ingredients you wish?

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • an electric grill or panini maker
  • a loaf of italian bread
  • cheese (two slices per sandwich) of your choice
  • oil packed tuna
  • cooking spray
  • lettuce leaves of your choice
  1. Step 1

Slice your bread into slices about twice the thickness of normally sliced bread. You want to start with slices a bit thicker than normal because the grill or panini maker will squash them while toasting.

  2. Step 2

Turn on your grill or panini maker and pre-heat as required by your manufacturer.

  3. Step 3

Open your tuna and drain off extra oil. Flake it a bit with a fork.

  4. Step 4

Build your sandwiches. For each sandwich: take two slices of bread. Top each with a slice of cheese. Put a lettuce leaf or two on one side, and add a few tablespoons of tuna on the other. Carefully put the halves together.

  5. Step 5

Spray the top slice of bread lightly with the cooking spray. Put the sandwich that side down on the grill, then lightly spray the new piece on top. Close your device.

  6. Step 6

Watch carefully. Typically, sandwiches take between 4 and 7 minutes to get all melty and nice. Watch them so they don't burn.

  7. Step 7

Remove carefully with heat proof spatulas or tongs, and let rest until cool enough to eat. Enjoy.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use well drained oil packed tuna. Water packed tuna is too wet and makes soggy panini.
  • Experiment with different types of cheeses and breads for different flavors.
  • Pay attention to your appliance so you don't burn your sandwiches.
