Things You'll Need:
- Willingness to make changes
-
Step 1
Make changes to your diet. Cut out things like caffeine and alcohol which can be damaging to your unborn baby and raise your risk of miscarriage. Choose a balanced diet that includes several servings of fruits and vegetables.
-
Step 2
Make changes to your lifestyle. Along with cutting out alcohol, you'll also want to stop smoking and doing illegal drugs. Second hand smoke can be just as dangerous, so avoid being around others who smoke.
-
Step 3
Take a look at your weight and exercise level. If you're overweight or underweight, take steps to get into a more healthy weight range. If you don't currently exercise, consider starting an exercise regimen - even something as simple as walking a few times a week will help.
-
Step 4
Start taking folic acid. All women of child-bearing age should take this important supplement. Folic acid helps prevent a birth defect called spina bifida and needs to be taken even before you become pregnant.
-
Step 5
Have your partner make a couple of important changes as well. If he typically wears briefs, have him switch to boxers. This can help increase sperm count and keep the sperm healthier. Also have him avoid hot tubs or hot showers which can cause damage to sperm and may increase your risk of a birth defect.
