Chocolate covered Oreos (also known as gourmet Oreos) are a great way to show someone that you cared enough to make them a handmade gift from the heart. Not only are there endless flavor and color possibilities ... but people really appreciate the effort you put in.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Baking chocolate (they sell it at craft stores ... and in most bulk food sections of grocery stores.
  • cooling racks
  • Oreos (any flavor you want)
  • sprinkles (you don't have to use sprinkles, but it definitely adds something extra to the appearance)
  • double boiler
  • fork
  • wax paper
  1. Step 1

First get all the things you'll need out on a clean table or counter. Put the cooling trays opened on top of cookie sheets (this will allow chocolate to melt through the slits of the cooling tray and land on the cookie sheet for easy clean up). Then place that cookie sheet lengthwise on the side of the stove you won't be double boiling on. For example...if you are going to be using the double boiler on the right front burner ... than the cookie sheet should be resting on the left front and back burners. Fill the bottom of the double boiler with water..place the second part of the double boiler inside of that part. Turn the burner on...starting at a low to medium temperature. There is no need to use a thermometer ... its just one more thing getting in the way of you stirring ... and all you need to know is if the chocolate is melting..or not. Get your sprinkles out and cookie packages opened. You only have about 1 minute after covering the Oreo in chocolate to add sprinkles and have them really stick well.

  2. Step 2

When the double boiler has about 5 minutes to get the water warmed up ... place the chocolate inside of the double boiler and from this point on you'll need to keep stirring .... the chocolate will be completely melt and smooth in about 3 minutes. You want to make sure not to turn it on high or it will burn or get black spots and stink. Put about 5 Oreos in at one time and move them around gentle with a fork. Take them out one at a time with the fork... give them a little shake to get off some of the excess chocolate and then place it on the GREASED cooling tray. This will allow the excess chocolate slowly melt off and leave just a nice thing layer of chocolate on each cookie. If you are going to add sprinkles...do it immediately.

  3. Step 3

If you are going to switch colors of your chocolate, then you must completely wash the upper portion on the double boiler to ensure that your colors don't mix together and become discolored. There are all sort of variations you can use for different colors and occasions. White chocolate for weddings ... pink and blue for baby showers .... brown is usually considered the most "gourmet" of the colors .... and rather than sprinkles you can have a little drizzle of white chocolate on the tops to give it more of a gourmet look. Drizzling chocolate doesn't have the same rules as sprinkles ... you don't need to rush to apply it.

  4. Step 4

After you fill up a cookie sheet ... place it in the freezer to secure the chocolate ... after about 15 minutes remove them from the freezer ... take them off of the cooling trays ... put them on plates with each layer separated by wax paper.

Tips & Warnings
  • Craft stores sell cute boxes to put these cookies in for gift with "handmade" stickers and little bows especially made for gift giving ... but there are tons of ways to present them....on trays..plates..in Chinese food containers (the gift type they sell at craft stores)... cute plastic craft bags... any sort of decorative bag that you think is cute!
  • The double boiler gets extremely hot and melted chocolate is extremely hot as well. Be very careful!
