Patch
Patch

It does not matter if it is a Girl Scout Patch or a Patch for the knee of old jeans the process is always the same.

This will outline the process for you step by step.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Needle
  • Thread
  • Scissors
  • Straight Pins
  • Thimble (if you like)
  1. Step 1
    Straight Pins
    Straight Pins

Take the article of cloth that you are going to attach the patch to. Test places that you want to put this patch. Decide on a location and take straight pins and attach the patch to the cloth in the location you desire.

  2. Step 2
    Threading the Needle
    Threading the Needle

Now that the patch is where you want it thread your needle. I like to double my thread. What I mean by that is that I thread the needle and I join the two ends together and tie them. This make the tread a little stronger.

  3. Step 3
    Whip Stitch
    Whip Stitch

It is time to sew. I use what is called a whip stitch. You will see a picture below of what a whip stitch looks like. This is how it is done. Take your needle in hand and place the needle on the back side of the garment. Pull the needle threw the garment and the patch and Whip the thread around the edge of the patch and down thru the garment and back up through the patch again. Repeat this until you have completely attached the patch to the cloth.

  4. Step 4

If you run out of thread you need to re-thread the needle and repeat Step 3 from the place you left off until you have completely attached the patch or you need to re-thread.

  5. Step 5
    Cut the Thread
    Cut the Thread

Once you have gone all the way around the patch. Continue the whip stich in the same place at least 3 times. Push the needle to the back side of the cloth along this same stitch and then cut the thread with your scissors.

  6. Step 6

Remove your straigt pins and your patch is in place!

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure as you sew your patch you are not bunching up the cloth as you go. Ensure the patch and the cloth are flat.
