Determine Your Medical Coverage on Your Auto Insurance

Understanding your auto insurance isn't easy. Especially when the medical portion is broken down into so many parts. Making sure you are properly covered is important, so you need to understand your coverages and what exactly they cover.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A copy of your current automobile insurance policy
  1. Step 1

First take out your automobile insurance policy. You are looking for the declarations page. This page shows all of your coverages. The rest of the policy explains your car insurance, but for this you will just need the declarations page. If you have the quote sheet this will work too.

  2. Step 2

Look at your liability coverage. The medical portion is broken into three sections. First is the bodily injury coverage. This basically covers the "other" person. If you hit someone this pays for that person's medical bills. There is a per person limit and a per accident limit. The per person limit is the maximum your car insurance policy will pay out for a single person's medical bills. The per accident is the maximum your insurance pays out per accident. If there is more than one person injured, you will max out at the per accident limit. In this case all of the injured parties may not get the maximum per person if they file a claim.

  3. Step 3

Next is your medical coverage. This is the limit that your auto insurance policy pays out for your injuries. This coverage pays out after your health insurance coverage. Because of this the limit is lower. It will cover anything your health insurance doesn't pay for.

  4. Step 4

The last portion of your medical coverage is called your uninsured motorist coverage. This is the coverage that will pay for your medical bills if an uninsured driver hits you. While all states except New Hampshire require liability insurance, there are still some people who don't carry it. If you are in a car wreck with some who is uninsured this coverage may come in handy.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some states also offer under insured coverage. This covers your medical bills if someone doesn't have enough car insurance.
  • To get the best rates possible, get quotes with different insurance companies.
