Install Wii Homebrew Geexbox Media Player

The Nintendo Wii homebrew scene has so many applications to offer to boost your Wii's capabilities, making your investment just that much sweeter. This eHow will teach you how to install the media player, Geexbox, to play on your Wii.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Wii
  • Wii remote
  • SD card
  • SD card Reader
  • PC with Internet Access
  • Geexbox download
  • Homebrew Channel [see my other eHow on this :)]
  1. Step 1

The first thing you want to do is install the Twilight Princess Hack and Homebrew Channel if not already installed. I have eHows to explain this if they need to be installed [http://www.ehow.com/how_4522563_wii-homebrew-soft-mod-wii.html and http://www.ehow.com/how_4736509_install-wii-homebrew-channel.html, respectively].

  2. Step 2

Using a card reader on your PC, make sure your SD card is formatted to FAT 16/32. Also go to www.wiibrew.org and search "Geexbox" to find the homebrew Geexbox download.

  3. Step 3

To add homebrew Geexbox to your already installed Homebrew Channel, you need to make sure there is a folder called "Apps" on the root of your SD card. If there is not, make a folder and title it "Apps" [This is done on your PC using a card reader.]

  4. Step 4

Inside the Apps folder [on SD card] is where you will create a folder and title it "Geexbox." Then unzip the download to get 2 folders: "apps" and "GEEXBOX." The GEEXBOX folder will go onto the root of the SD card. Inside the apps folder is another geexbox folder. Open that folder and add the files [meta.XML, icon.PNG, boot.dol] to the /apps/geexbox directory on the SD card.

  5. Step 5

Insert your SD card into your Wii and start it up. You will load the Homebrew Channel and in the application list, you should now see the Geexbox channel. Simply click on it and it will load. Congrats! You now have Geexbox installed.

Tips & Warnings
  • This homebrew app is brought to you by farter.
  • Make sure you added the GEEXBOX folder [from the geexbox download] to the root of the SD card.
  • If you get "Failed to read boot.elf (-1)" error, your SD card may not be formatted as FAT16/32. Try reformatting your SD card with using a SD card format tool from the internet.
  • If Geexbox is not showing up in the HomeBrew Channel, make sure to check the Geexbox folder [in "apps" folder] for these 3 files: meta.XML, icon.PNG, and boot.dol. The important thing to remember is to rename each .dol file to boot.dol. Also make sure the Homebrew Channel boot.dol file is present on the root of your SD card. If files are there and you still cannot see the channel, try reformatting your SD card with using a SD card format tool from the internet and re-add the homebrew Geexbox as stated in Step 4.
  • Do not spend all night playing the mass amounts of homebrew apps now at your fingertips!
  • Take breaks from playing every once in awhile.
  • I nor any of the homebrew developers can be held liable if you brick your Wii. The chances are slim to none of it happening, but just had to cover post "DO AT YOUR OWN RISK.
