Bell the beagle. Beagles are very shy and timid.

Ever go to a friend's house where they have a dog who just seems so afraid of you? Or maybe an animal shelter, or even one of your own dogs? You want to pet him or her, but they are timid and scared. You will learn how to befriend any shy dog with the next few steps.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A loving hand
  • treats
  • patience
  • A kind heart
  1. Step 1

Be slow and gentle with your movements. Never approach to quickly or make any sudden movements, or this might scare the dog.

  2. Step 2

Talk in a calm, sweet voice. Not too loud. Do not clap your hands or slap your leg. Keep talking sweetly.

  3. Step 3

Hold out your hand. This would help if you had treats. Lay down a treat and back up. Keep repeating until the dog is close or sniffs your outstretched hand.

  4. Step 4

Be still. When the dog is sniffing your hand, this is like a greeting and an introduction. The dog is finding out who you are! Most likely, he or she will stop sniffing after a few moments and let you pet them. Still use slow movements and a gentle voice.

Tips & Warnings
  • Crouching down will help. The dog might be even more reluctant to come if you are standing up, and being taller than he or she is.
  • Be aware! Some dogs become aggressive when scared, so don't force them to bond. Back off if their ears go back, or they show their teeth.
