Things You'll Need:
- Sharp scissors
- Water
- Vase
- Aspirin
- Flower food packet
- Lemon-lime soda
-
Step 1
As soon as you get your flowers home, unwrap the flowers and place them in your kitchen sink with a couple inches of water. Using a pair of sharp scissors, cut each flower stem at an angle, ideally just above a node (where the stems get bigger). Remove any leaves or foliage from the stems that will fall below the waterline (leaves below the waterline can breed mildew and bacteria).
-
Step 2
Fill a vase with fresh, cold water. Mix in about a teaspoon of bleach per quart. This helps to keep the water free of bacteria. Another option is to add an aspirin tablet to the water (about one tablet per quart).
-
Step 3
Add the packet of flower food that came with the bouquet of flowers. Or, try adding a splash of lemon-lime soda (the sugar provides the flowers with food).
-
Step 4
Arrange the flowers in the vase. Change the water with fresh water about once every three days. Your flowers can last for 10-14 days following these steps. Enjoy!
