A college education is invaluable, but it is also expensive. Scholarships can be essential to offsetting the cost of college.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Start researching college scholarships in advance. Whether you are a junior in high school or a potential graduate student, educate yourself about the scholarship programs available to you early on in ensure that you don't miss deadlines.

  2. Step 2

Apply for financial aid in addition to other scholarship applications. Depending on your financial situation you may be eligible to receive a significant sum of money to cover your tuition, fees, and sometimes even living expenses.

  3. Step 3

Do well in school. This seems obvious enough but a transcript needs to be a clear cut snapshot of the applicant's academic strengths and potential, in order to be considered for scholarship grants. Think of your grades as an educational resume in being granted a scholarship.

  4. Step 4

Find a way to be active in your community. Try sports teams, volunteer; find a suitable program you can take part in. Scholarship committees often take into account your ability to contribute, manage a schedule, and work well with others.

  5. Step 5

Apply for as many scholarships as you are eligible for. There are minority scholarships, athletic scholarships, and merit scholarships. There are also need-based scholarships for those who demonstrate financial need.

Tips & Warnings
  • Talk to enrollment counselors at the colleges you are interested in.
  • Search for scholarships specific to your life situation and educational goals.
