Learn the science behind how to lose weight and eat right.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

To obtain weight loss you don't need the fad diets or Oprah's trainers and cooks. To lose weight, the first thing to realize is that you simple just have to burn more than you take in. Weight loss is a net loss of calories, pure and simple.

  2. Step 2

You burn calories just by being alive. Breathing alone will burn calories which is why you need to eat to feed your body.

  3. Step 3

Remember this simple equation: 1 lb = 3500 calories. What does this mean to you? Just that to lose 1 lb, you need a net deficit of 3500 calories from what you currently intake.

  4. Step 4

You can cause this drop by one (or a combination) of 3 ways:
-Calorie Intake Reduction (fancy way of saying dieting)
    -Cardio (Aerobic Exercise)
    -Strength Training (Anaerobic Exercise)

  5. Step 5

Make sure you eat a healthy diet (whole grains, plenty of vegetables, fresh fruit, and lean protein) and drink water throughout the day to prevent dehydration. Dehydration can cause your metabolism to drop by as much as 3%

  6. Step 6

Building muscle raises your metabolism so that you can burn more calories while doing nothing (including while you're sleeping)

  7. Step 7

Remember, it's always best to visit a physician first before starting a weight loss & exercise plan.

  8. Step 8

And stick with it! Set a goal and stick with it for 30 days, studies have shown that new habits take a little bit to settle in.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't force yourself to do exercises that you dislike. For example, if you hate running, try walking instead. Forcing yourself to do things you dislike will only make you want to quit, so instead focus on the types of exercise that you do like.
  • The same rule applies to food. We all know that broccoli is good for you, but if you hate it, don't force yourself to eat it. Instead, swap it out for some asparagus or fresh garden salad.
  • It is advised to see a doctor prior to starting a new diet or exercise plan.
