Taking a vacation doesn't mean you have to leave home. If the economy has taken a bite out of the vacation budget, then consider a staycation. A staycation means you stay at home or least you don't leave town. A vacation is really a state of mind and a time to destress and recharge. This is easy to do on a tight budget without taking a trip.

  1. Step 1

    All good vacations require a plan, the same goes for a staycation. Make a list of things you want to accomplish, whether it's complete relaxation, learning a new skill, or seeing the sights.

    Turn off your mail, your cell phone, and create an away message for your email box.

    Most people never take the time to tour their own city. Is there a museum you have always wanted to visit, a sports event you have been meaning to attend, or a historic site that sounds interesting? Take a look at any local travel guides and schedule a few sight seeing day trips during your staycation.

    Schedule at least one day to completely relax by sleeping late, going to the spa, or just hanging out all day in your pajamas and catching up on movies and reading.

    If you are interested in learing something new, consider taking an art class, attending a lecture, or go to a wine tasting. Or just watch the cooking channel and learn a couple new and healthy recipes.

    Try to get some physical activity in, such as walking, going to the gym, or trying a new form of exercise like a yoga or pilates class.
