Things You'll Need:
- time
- your dog
- treats
- ability to move your finger and say a command
-
Step 1
First, take a treat into your right hand (if right handed, left hand if not), and put the closed fist with treat right by your dog's nose. Gently lure your dog till he goes around in a slow spin.
-
Step 2
Keep doing this motion while luring until your dog understands the motion. Then add the command: "Spin." As your dog begins to spin with the lure and the command, the next step will be to point out your index finger downward while doing it. He will begin to associate the finger up from the fist in a downward motion with the verbal command, "spin."
-
Step 3
Practice the motion and command with your dog for several days, and not too many times in a day. Spinning would make you dizzy, so why would a dog like to spin many times? Keep the spinning at a minimum and only when your dog is eager to please and not tired or bored of doing tricks for you.
-
Step 4
Now that your dog knows how to spin in order to get the lure, fade the lure. This means, you are slowly going to take the treat or lure away and replace it with affection. Now, when your dog spins, encourage his new talent with smiles and petting. Never jump up and down with glee because this will scare your dog.
-
Step 5
Soon your dog will be able to spin upon command just as you make the motion with your fist and index finger pointing downward in a spinning movement. It will help if you use the verbal command, "spin," while doing the motion for a while. Eventually just by looking at your hand movement doing the spin, your dog will spin for you. Have fun!
