Take everything out of your closet.

    • 2

Sort through your clothing. Throw away any clothing that is irreparably stained or damaged. Donate clothing that you have not worn in six months or that no longer fits you.

    • 3

Place out-of-season clothing into an under-the-bed storage container.

    • 4

Determine if any non-clothing items can be discarded or should be stored somewhere else.

    • 5

Place the non-clothing items that will stay into medium-sized boxes. Label each box with the contents using a permanent marker. Place the boxes in the closet.

    • 6

Place the remainder of your clothing back in your closet. Sort the garments by the situations in which you will wear them, such as work clothing, casual clothing or formal wear.

    • 7

Place small accessories, such as belts, scarves and handbags, in an over-the-door closet organizer.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the current closet shelving won't hold all your items, you may need a closet organization system. Custom closet organization systems can be expensive. Purchase stackable storage such as cubes or shelves instead, and create your own configuration.

  • If you still have too much clothing to store in your closet after removing the clothing that you no longer wear and the out-of- season clothing, consider installing a second rod underneath the primary rod. Particularly tall closets can even support a third closet rod, although the garments will be difficult to access.

  • If you are hanging your sweaters in your closet, don't. Sweaters need to be folded. Hangers can stretch out and ultimately ruin sweaters.
