How to Do a Backside Tailslide on a Skateboard

Combining an ollie and a backside 180, this trick is all about control, and it's a tough one to learn. Strive.

Difficulty: Moderately challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Skate Rails
  • Skateboard Decks
  • Skateboard Helmets
  • Skateboard Pads
  • Skateboard Parts
  • Skateboard Trucks
  • Skateboard Wheels
  • Skateboarding Shoes
  • Skateboards
  1. Step 1

Skateboard toward your obstacle (a ledge that is just an inch or two taller than a curb would be ideal), approaching it so you are almost parallel to it.

  2. Step 2

Pop your tail and turn 90 degrees, landing with your tail on the object. You will have to turn your shoulders to look where you want to go, so you won't be able to see directly what your body is doing, but you'll be able to see down onto the board.

  3. Step 3

Go into the slide with your toes on the tail and your front foot over the front bolts. How far and how well you slide will depend on your speed and angle.

  4. Step 4

Come out of the trick into a fakie (rolling backward, 180 degrees from the way you were facing at the start of the trick). If you can get up on top of the trick, your body will almost naturally turn out to fakie.

Tips & Warnings
  • To do this trick, you need to know how to ollie, and some backside 180 knowledge wouldn't hurt, either (check out our related eHows). You must be able to ollie backside onto your tail and stall it there. Once you've got that figured out, you're ready to start sliding.
  • Skateboarding is an inherently dangerous activity that can result in serious injury or death. We recommend that you seek proper training and equipment before attempting this activity.

on 8/8/2006 Never start anything out on a curb. To be cool, roll up in a way that feels comfortable. Scoop your tail into it and turn your shoulders into it. Straighten your back foot so as to not stick and be sent onto your back. This overturns your back tail, so don't lean too far back. Finally, turn your shoulders back into the way you want to land (faki or regs) and roll away smooth.

on 11/22/2005 Approach whatever your going to grind at a slight angle and think about doing a backside 180. The object is to ollie and begin turning 180 so the tail lands on the grind rail. Land with your weight your back foot. In order to slide, you need your weight on the tail and both back wheels tight against the grind rail. Look forward as you slide, turn your shoulders and legs so that you ride away regular. If you want to ride away fakie, you must turn your front foot and your back foot slightly as you slide off the grind rail.

on 11/22/2005 These are very complicated to land. I suggest trying it on flat land first. When riding at a comfortable speed, ollie up into a 90. When doing this, turn your body, then whip your body the direction you're spinning - keep your feet on the board! Once you have done a 180, point your nose (tail after the 180) down (helps in keeping your balance when landing), then kick your back foot out to do the rest of the 180. Land centered and ride away.

on 11/22/2005 Hang your back foot off of the tail a little (like you do on a shove), bend your knees and build up your pop. Jump up in the air and through your back foot (a little harder than usual) to get a 360 spin. During this process, fling your front foot as if you were kicking the side of the nose. Once the rotation and spin have completed, catch your board and bring it down (don't forget to bend your knees as you land to absorb the impact).

on 11/22/2005 what you do is let your back foot hang off the back and kick it out and let the board spin 3hundred degrees and let it flip then let land on the ground and you slam down and land on the board and roll away and put al ittle style in it and thats it
