A fireplace mantle isn't just for collecting clutter and fireplace tools. The mantle is a shelf that showcases whatever items it holds. Take advantage of the mantle instead of wasting it on items that don't deserve to be spotlighted. Use the mantle to display treasures and conversation starters and enhance the room with the mantle's decoration.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Think photos. The mantle is a great place to put favorite photos and pictures. Simply frame them and organize them on top of the mantle. In fact, framed photographs are the most common item on fireplace mantles. The photos don't have to be of people--they can be landscape pictures or photos of anything else that's interesting. Choose picture frames that tie in to each other, whether it's by pattern, color or other features.

  2. Step 2

Use a mirror. Mirrors are a favorite of interior designers because they make rooms appear larger. A frame that matches the rest of the decor of the room ties the mirror in with the rest of the room. There are several sizes and shapes of mirrors that work on or above a fireplace mantle, from extremely large to small. If using small mirrors, multiples are a great way to get the room-enlarging benefit that a large mirror gives, while allowing for designing freedom and creativity.

  3. Step 3

Try some accents. Decorative accents on a mantle add personality to the room. Handcarved pieces, trinkets from foreign places or sentimental gifts that bring back happy memories make great additions to mantle decor. Think unique and interesting accessories that will intrigue guests.

  4. Step 4

Go green. Plants and greenery, whether artificial or living, are great for mantles. The color green is relaxing, especially when it has a natural source. Ivy is especially attractive on fireplace mantles, since it can trail down the sides easily, giving an added visual appeal. Keep in mind that live plants near fireplaces may have to be moved seasonally, since they have temperature and humidity needs that may be disturbed by a blazing fire in the fireplace.

  5. Step 5

Remember lighting. Even the greatest decorations don't matter if the lighting doesn't showcase them. Lighting that spotlights the mantle shows off all the beautiful decorations. Recessed lighting or spotlights are easy to adjust to highlight different items on the mantle.
