How to Make Hat Pins

Hat pins are a fast project that anyone can learn how to do in a short amount of time. With just a few steps you can have an attractive and unique accent that will spotlight a special bead. If you don't have a special bead, use several complementary beads that will achieve similar results.

Hat pins can be as fancy or as simple as you wish! They are inexpensive to make, so make several to match different outfits and colors. Does this Spark an idea?

  • Hat pin finding 1 8-mm crystal bead (or several smaller beads) 1 gold crimp bead Spacer beads (optional) Crimp pliers

  1. How to Make Hat Pins

    • 1

      Make certain that the bead (or beads) selected will slide all the way to the end of the hat pin finding. Slide the bead (or beads) onto the hat pin.

      To secure a bead that has holes that are so large that they will not stay on the hat pin and won't be held in place by a crimp bead, use "spacer beads" on each side of the bead. These flat beads will hold the larger bead in place and allow it to be secured by the crimp bead.

      After the bead(s) are placed on the hat pin finding, slide the crimp bead onto the finding, push it all the way to the bead(s) and secure the crimp bead in place firmly.

      To secure the crimp bead, squeeze it tightly with the crimp pliers. Check to make sure that the crimp bead is tightly secured and won't slip on the hat pin finding.

Tips & Warnings

  • Select beads that have large enough holes to accommodate the diameter of the hat pin.
