Gel-Coat a Fiberglass Swimming Pool

In-ground swimming pools are typically manufactured with fiberglass, vinyl or concrete. Fiberglass is among the most popular options because it is easy to install and maintain. The typical fiberglass pool surface will last 15 to 20 years before the smooth gel-coat needs to be reapplied. While it is a time-consuming job, you can so it with the right tools.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Hand sander/sand blaster 24-grit sanding pad Fiberglass crack filler Wet/dry vacuum Water Soft cloth Gel-coat solvent Paint roller Gel coat
  1. Step 1

Remove as much of the old gel-coat surface as possible using a hand sander and 24-grit sanding pad.

  2. Step 2

Thoroughly vacuum sanding debris with a wet/dry vacuum.

  3. Step 3

Wash down the sides and bottom of the pool using a soft cloth and water. Allow the surface to dry completely before moving on to the next step.

  4. Step 4

Use a filler such as Fibre-ShelkoteTM to cover any cracks in the pool surface. Allow the filler to dry according to the package directions.

  5. Step 5

Lightly sand crack-filled areas smooth so that they blend with the contour of the pool surface. Wipe down the surface with a soft cloth and water. Allow the area to dry completely.

  6. Step 6

Apply a gel-coat solvent to remove any additional debris that might compromise the gel-coat surface. Do this just before applying the gel-coat product.

  7. Step 7

Roll on the first layer of gel-coat using a paint roller. Start with the farthest wall from the stairs. Do all the walls first and then the bottom of the pool

  8. Step 8

Allow the pool to dry until the surface is no longer tacky to the touch. This typically takes one to three hours.

  9. Step 9

Apply the second and third gel-coats in the same manner, allowing ample drying time between each application.

  10. Step 10

Allow the gel-coat to cure at least three days before re-filling pool with water.

Tips & Warnings
  • To expedite the sanding process, use a sand blaster. Use a paint pole for the bottom of the pool. Be sure all corners are well-coated before doing this. Exact drying times will depend on the temperature, humidity and direct sunlight.
  • The pool wall temperature must be at least 60 degrees, and no more than 90 degrees, for proper gel-coat application.
