Locate the wall studs with a stud finder. Measure from floor to the height you want the top shelf to be. Mark that point on one stud for each rail. Rails are the vertical boards of your wall unit.

    • 2

Decide how wide you want your bedroom wall unit to be. Each rail will have to be centered on a stud so that the width of each shelf will be at least the distance between two studs. Use a level to mark the width of the wall unit to the desired height.

Sand and stain all boards, allow to dry for 24 hours. Stain all boards on the other side and allow 24 hours drying time again. Apply three to four coats of clear acrylic deck coating, drying between coats.

Drill two holes at each end of each shelf, 1 inch from the front and back edge of the wall unit. drill matching holes in each rail, at desired shelf height. Assemble your wall unit on the floor. Place shelves between every two rails. Stagger shelves in unit so the first and third row have three shelves each and the second and fourth rows have two or four. Square the shelves and rails so that each meets at a 90-degree angle.

    • 5

Raise bedroom wall unit up to the wall. Drill pilot holes for all the wall brackets. Screw unit into wall using Sheetrock screws.

Tips & Warnings

  • Round the corners of your shelf unit before assembly, if desired, using a power sander or sanding blocks.

  • Be sure to anchor unit to the wall using brackets and Sheetrock screws. If the wall is concrete or you cannot find the studs, use wall anchors instead of screws.
