Box Ottoman Seat Cushion

There are so many practical uses for box cushions. They can be used for a window seat, for a bench seat, for couch cushions or just regular kitchen chair cushions. The name comes from their square box shape as opposed to the rounded edge of other cushions. Knowing how to make your own is handy when you are making custom fit cushions for your redecorating project. Whatever your project, here are some simple directions to walk you through it.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width and depth of the seat you are making the cushion for. Add one half inch on each side and cut two pieces of fabric for the top and bottom of the cushion.

    • 2

Cut two pieces of fabric 6 inches by the length of the width of the seat plus one half inch on each end for the seam allowance. Do the same thing for the length of the depth of the cushion.

    • 3

Sew all the 6-inch side pieces together at the ends (right sides together) forming a ring. Make sure to leave a one half inch opening at either end of each seam, so each seam would only be 5 inches long. Iron each of the seams flat with the fabric folded out.

    • 4

Pin the side ring of fabric to the bottom piece of fabric, right sides together, matching up the edges. The ring should open at the corners allowing a half inch seam all around. Sew one side. Keep the needle in the fabric. Lift the tension foot on the sewing machine and swing the fabric to sew the next side. Repeat for the other three sides.

    • 5

Lay the piping cord along the top piece of fabric so that it is facing inward. Sew it down so that is sits just inside the one half inch seam mark. Now pin the rest of the cover to the top piece of fabric. Sew a one half inch seam all the way around except for an 8-inch section to leave as an opening for the foam.

    • 6

Insert the foam into the cushion seat cover. Line it up so that the corners all sit neatly. Slip stitch the opening closed with a small stitch neatly. Your cushion is now ready for use.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can insert a zipper in Step 5 where the 8 inch opening was left open
